# Writing styles

> A writing style controls how cleaned dictation sounds in SpeakoFlow. Compare the six built-in styles, including Formal, Casual, and Concise, and learn how to save your own.

A writing style controls how cleaned dictation *sounds*. It sits on top of [AI cleanup](/docs/writing/ai-cleanup) and is separate from your cleanup prompt, so you can mix any prompt with any style.

Pick one in *Settings → Dictation → AI cleanup → Writing style*.

## Built-in styles

| Style                             | How it reads                                                         | What it will not do                                                           |
| --------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **None (cleanup only)** (default) | Fixed text, same voice.                                              | Change your register on purpose.                                              |
| **Formal**                        | Polished, complete sentences. Slang becomes precise neutral wording. | Turn ceremonial or legalistic unless you already were.                        |
| **Casual**                        | Relaxed and conversational, with ordinary contractions.              | Invent slang, jokes, or familiarity that was not there.                       |
| **Professional**                  | Direct, courteous, easy to act on, with rambling removed.            | Run longer than the original, or read like sales copy.                        |
| **Friendly**                      | Warm and approachable.                                               | Add compliments, emoji, exclamation marks, or enthusiasm you did not express. |
| **Concise**                       | As brief as possible. Repetition, hedging, and wordiness go.         | Drop a material fact, condition, name, number, or deadline.                   |

Every built-in style preserves your meaning, facts, and point of view, and keeps the length close to what you said. Concise is the one exception, and it is allowed to shorten but still not to drop a detail.

## Creating your own

The built-ins are fixed, but you can save any number of your own beside them. In the **Writing style** section, choose *Create style*.

Both fields are required. Your new style is selected as soon as you save it, and it appears in the same dropdown as the built-ins from then on. Select it and use *Edit* to change or delete it. Built-in styles have no edit button, because there is nothing stored to edit.

  Your style never replaces your cleanup prompt. Both are sent to the model together. Cleanup strength is a third, independent dial: it decides how much of your rambling gets tidied away, while the style decides the register of whatever survives.
